2.7 結語
在本章中，我們回顧了近千年的氣候變遷，也瞭解了氣候變遷具有多重時間尺度的特性。氣候變遷複雜的程度，科學家至今只解開了謎團的一小部份。最明顯的例子是，『政府間氣候變遷小組』科學家對近代氣候的研究結果仍有許多模稜兩可的地方。 尤其是，他們仍無法判斷20世紀是不是1400年以來最暖的世紀。這其實很容易理解。因為有系統而且準確的氣象觀測也不過是最近幾十年的事情，遑論幾世紀之前。即使幾十年前的颱風資料也付之闕如。正因為如此，我們仍無法有信心地回答上述的問題。
這個例子充份顯現了科學家研究氣候變遷所面臨的難題及窘況。有人甚至會問，我們所發掘出的「事實」有多少是真實的？這也是許多科學家絞盡腦汁想要回答的問題。能夠解釋氣候變遷，而且歷經千錘百煉、顛撲不破的證據及理論或許仍不存在。但是，科學的發展是人類智慧的結晶，是從許多嘗試錯誤( trial and error )中累積出來的知識，古氣候研究所累積的經驗與證據，使我們對氣候的運作有更深一層的理解。
